Teen Court Program
Teen Court is a
Diversion Program for first-time, non-violent offenders, committing
misdemeanor offenses. Teen Court provides a peer operated disposition
mechanism that constructively allows young people to gain hands-on legal
experience by participating in the program as a prosecutor, defender, or a
jury member. The Teen Court Program encourages actual juvenile defendants to
take responsibility for their actions and learn to make amends for violating
the law, while providing a positive learning experience for defendants and
volunteers. Consequences for juvenile offenders who participate in the Teen
Court program include community service, victim/offender mediation,
restorative group circle and tutoring and independent living skills courses.
Teen Court’s objective
is to cultivate academic improvement, problem-solving capability, conflict
resolution skills, positive peer-on-peer contact, positive
youth-on-professional contact, while empowering all participants with the
ability to make good life decisions, decreasing juvenile delinquency and
recidivism and increasing positive behavior, community awareness and a sense
of safer communities.
