OPJC Judges Make 2012 New Year’s Resolutions
At the
beginning of the year, individuals make many personal resolutions
for the New Year. This year, the Judges of the Orleans Parish
Juvenile Court have come together to make a set of resolutions for
the Court.
The Judges,
taking stock of their past work and efforts at juvenile justice
reform, have set an ambitious course for 2012 - all for the purpose
of ensuring public safety for our community and holding youth
accountable, while at the same time giving them “a second chance.”
That said, the Judges have resolved to:
· Work
as a team and trust others to do their best. Each of us should know
what role we play and regularly practice our skills to be our
personal best. We will work cohesively as a group to operate the
Court in an efficient, fair and productive manner;
· Continue
to blend expertise by collaborating and leveraging resources with
other governmental agencies, juvenile justice stakeholders and
community organizations that serve our children and families;
· Protect,
defend and advocate for those who rely on us, giving special
attention to the needs of others at every stage of life who may not
know how to find their own voice;
· Work
to ensure a continuum of developmentally and culturally appropriate
youth and family services, with greater utilization of alternatives
to detention and confinement;
· Never
give up on a person or a cause, despite the challenges we face as we
recognize that perseverance is an attitude that exemplifies
leadership, attracts allies, and creates meaningful change; and
· Speak
truth to power as we advocate with assertion, confidence and
commitment for effective and meaningful prevention, intervention and
rehabilitative policies and programs.
This
upcoming year promises to be a year to move forward in an effort to
bring the Court to the next phase in reform efforts. The Judges
collectively embrace the challenges and look forward to the progress
of the Court in the years to come.
“All labor
that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and
should
be undertaken with painstaking excellence.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
